At the 2026 Alaska Marine Science Symposium, researchers from the Alaska Ocean Observing System (AOOS) and the Alaska HAB Network highlighted growing concerns around harmful algal blooms (HABs) across Alaska’s waters from the Gulf of Alaska to the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands. Presentations emphasized how HAB monitoring and research are improving understanding of toxin impacts on fisheries, shellfish safety, and marine ecosystems. The symposium also highlighted collaborative efforts to improve maritime safety, including vessel tracking and weather monitoring led by the Marine Exchange of Alaska, reinforcing the critical role of ocean observing systems in protecting Alaska’s communities, fisheries, and blue economy.
