Scientists with the Great Lakes Observing System (GLOS) are asking the public to help measure ice thickness and snow cover on the Great Lakes and inland lakes this winter. Data submitted online by ice fishers and others who spend time on frozen lakes will help improve ice forecast models, which satellites cannot measure accurately for thickness. The information will also help researchers better understand how changing temperatures are affecting regional ice cover and provide critical safety insights for people on the ice. “Usually it’s the scientists putting data out to the public, and this time we’re asking the public to give feedback to improve the models,” said Shelby Brunner, GLOS science and observations manager.
